It’s official. We’re now a banana republic. I had this sneaking suspicion that we were well on our way when Kapil Sibal started his machinations last year; no doubts remain now that a Professor at Jadavpur University has been arrested for “spreading” a cartoon that shows Mamta Banerjee, Dinesh Trivedi and Mukul Roy in “a poor light” (sic)
Poor light? Really? Newsflash, Didi. Idolising their subjects is not the way cartoons usually make people laugh.
Arresting somebody for expressing his views to people on his email list? Is that the kind of country we have become? First it was obscenity or “offending religious sentiments”. Now it seems you can be imprisoned for cartoons that express dissent, disapproval or just a different point of view.
The way we’re going – corruption, institutional decay, rising intolerance in both the private and public spheres, the economy down the crapper – I seriously need to contemplate emigration. Perhaps a country which, over the next couple of years, might be in a place better than where we’re headed.
Quirkynorthkorean? Has a nice ring to it, I must say.

You know the only good thing about this news? It got you to do a post 🙂
Seriously, we seem to be heading into total madness. It certainly won’t be long before we get into trouble for what we email, or even worse, talk within our homes!

Glad to see a blog post from you after so long. 🙂
I was not going to see the linked news because of my newly developed distaste of sorts for most of the ‘current affairs’ – both for being sure that the complete truth might never be out, and for the fact that I’ve since long recognized the limitation of my domain of influence, which I want to operate within for doing good for myself and a few people I care for (yes, apathy is the term).
But then I did read the news item, and I could make out why could you have been so anguished. Despite my little trust in the Indian media stories, I asked myself, “what’s the worst the professor and his neighbor could have done?”, and then I realized how just about any average person like you or I could be intimidated and arrested for simply airing our opinions! That’s really, really scary!
I somehow admire you for ‘still’ letting yourself get genuinely agitated by injustice meted out to someone you personally don’t even know so as to blog about it despite a presumably very taxing and busy schedule. [I’m not being sarcastic. 🙂 ].
Cheers! 🙂

@Smitha: Hello! Thanks for commenting. Yes, even for somebody as uber cynical as me, this news was disturbing enough to make me blog again.
By the way, you could get into trouble for what you email, and that was how Mahapatra ended up in jail.
Section 66A of the IT Act makes it a criminal offence to even send a private email that could annoy or inconvenience someone. Specifically, “any electronic mail or electronic mail message for the purpose of causing annoyance or inconvenience…..shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and with fine”
It is not that unthinkable anymore to extend this, as you say, to what we might say within the confines of our homes.
@Ketan: Good to have posted again after so long, and thanks for the comment. Yes, this news was really shocking, and what is even worse is the fact that under the IT Act, specifically Section 66A, which I have quoted in my reply to Smitha, this could very well be the norm going forward. Scary thought.
@Kaushal: Thanks for the comment. Does that make us the largest banana republic in the world? 🙂

Liberty is earned. Neglect your rights, allow rulers to run riot just because “they need power to get things done” and risk losing it all. Just look to theSouth, where I live. Our great rulers took us from flawed democracy to Banana Republic in the short space of about 5-6 years and now appear to have set a straight course for ‘Rogue state’.
